Set up automatic downloads

Have received files saved to a folder on one computer as they arrive.

Files from incoming correspondence can be saved into a folder as they arrive, instead of being downloaded one by one.

  • Turn this on for one computer only. Each file is saved once, so with several computers on, files land wherever they were picked up first and end up scattered across the practice.
  • Patient files are saved onto that computer, so choose a folder your practice is happy to keep them in and clear it as you file them.
  • Mediref checks every couple of minutes, showing an Automatic download message in the bottom right corner while it saves.
  • Files are named date, patient, file name — 2026-03-05 - Jane Smith - Referral.pdf — so the folder sorts by the date the correspondence was sent.
  • Files you download yourself still go wherever Download location says — see Desktop app settings.

Steps

  1. In the desktop app on that computer, open Settings → Desktop App and click the Enable automatic downloads switch on.
  2. Choose the folder in the window that opens. Current download path: then shows it, and Change folder switches it later.
  3. Click the Launch on startup switch on, further down the page. Mediref has to be open for files to be saved.
